Fort Abercrombie was established in 1857 and was known as "the gateway to the Dakotas". It was also the first permanent United States fort built in what is now North Dakota. The fort was built to protect oxcart trails during the fur trapping era, military supply wagons, stagecoach routes and settlers coming into the area along with steamboat traffic on the Red River. In 1862 the fort was placed under siege by the Dakota Sioux for six weeks. The fort was manned by Minnesota Volunteers because the regular army soldiers were away fighting in the Civil War. Area settlers sought shelter in the fort. The fort was decommissioned in 1877 and the original buildings were sold and moved to other locations. In the 1930s some of the building were rebuilt to resemble the originals. Today this is a nice state historic park where you can explore the old fort area and go to the museum which has interesting displays about the fort, the history of the area, and the people who called the Abercrombie area home. The fort area is open dawn to dusk and is FREE. The museum is open 8:30 AM to 5 PM daily from 28 May to 5 September. Admission is $8 for adults and $3 for kids 6 to 14.

The address is Wahpeton but the fort is actually in the town of Abercrombie.
