Unique Building Sep 13, 2017
As you walk along Unity Street, cross Round Square and continue walking along that street, you will see another unique building – former Farmers and Nobility Bank - at 30 Unity Street (former October Street). It was called the Peasants' Land Bank, because it issued long-term loans for the purchase of noblemen's lands to peasants. The majority of guides call this building "the former Peasants' Bank". This building has its own special historical atmosphere, therefore, there are so many people here who want to be photographed there. Walking along the street, you might think that this building is a fairy-tale castle in which the princess lives.

It was built during the years 1906-1909 according the project of Alexander Kobelev (1860-1942), an architect from Kyiv. The two-storey building made of decorative red bricks contains some elements of the Old Russian architecture (which is also called Moscow Architecture). It meets the requirements of the popular Nouveau style of the early 20th century and is a sample of the so-called "Russian style" - a trend of modern style, which was known for using the stylized forms of Russian architecture of the 17th century.

The front of the building is adorned with mosaics and multicolored ceramic inserts. The multicolored mosaics give the building a special picturesqueness.

The central entrance on the cut off corner of the building deserves a special mention. Above the main entrance, there is a lancet porch. Two phoenix birds are hiding in its recesses. As we know from legends, those phoenix birds are ancient symbols of rebirth.

You can't help admiring the mosaic panels, colored ceramic inserts, sculptures, and artistic metalwork used in the facade decoration. This building is often call the most elegant building in the city.

Since 1937, the building had been occupied by the regional branch of the State Security Committee (KGB), and since 1991 – by the regional department of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU). The cellars of the former Peasants and Nobility Bank still remember the gold fund and many values that were preserved there, as well as the sufferings of the arrested "criminals", representatives of the precious human fund, who were kept, tortured and killed there for no reason, simply because the authorities did not like their behaviour.

Now the former bank building building belongs to the rare samples of the Russian architecture of Art Nouveau style and is an architectural monument of national importance. The building of the former Peasants Bank is one of the main architectural gems of the city and of the entire Poltava land. When you are in Poltava, visit this place and you will see its beauty first hand.
