Forbach Castle Aug 09, 2014
Once a proud medieval castle - now little more than a ruin: Forbach castle is the city's main attraction. The castle dates back to the 12th century and was expaneded several times in the late middle ages. In the Thirty Years War, Cardinal Richelieu ordered the castle to be destroyed.

Later, in the 19th cewntury, a businessman bought the castle ruins. He rebuilt the round tower in an octagonal way and also restored the small kinght's hall. The new tower got the nickname Saareck (Saar corner) and stands on the place where once the tour rouge (red tower) was. The castle as well as the city have often changed hands between French and German - ald although now French, the German names Schloss (Castle) and Schlossberg (Castle Hill) are still used in Forbach. Today, the castle is owned and maintained by the city.

In summertime, you can climb the tower for a fee of 2 EUR, for another Euro you can see the exhbition in the knights' hall (prices as of 2014). The exhbition in the knight's all is very small, consisting mainly of a handful of items found in the ruins, old photos from the castle and a knight's armour which has nothing to do with Forbach. The highlight are the small, but beautiful gothic arches. You can see the knights hall itself from the information desk where you buy the ticket - indeed the small room where the desk IS the knights' hall. So think twice, if the extra Euro is worth the money or if you consider it for yourself as a donation for the upkeep of the castle ruins. The view from the tower is great and probably the most rewarding thing a torusit can do in Forbach.

Attention: Castle and tower are only open in summertime and the French take their lunch break very serious - the tower is only open after lunch until 6pm. That means: Plan ahead, if you want to visit this place.
