Solo, Exploring Food and Batik Dec 02, 2010
If you have a plan to visit central java, besides Semarang, you should visit and enjoy Solo also. This is 2nd biggest city at Central java, so easy to catch up there. An International flight is available from Kuala Lumpur, some flight from Jakarta and also near (1 hour bus journey) from Jogja where more International flight available or 2 hours by bus from Semarang, capital city of Central Java.
Awarded as Heritage city by UNESCO at 2008, Solo provides a lot of tourism experiences. From food, shopping, nature, history and also play ground. Solo is the city where Batik was founded, besides 2 others city, Jogja and Pekalongan.
For food, I recommend you to taste “Nasi tim”, they called it Nasi tim because they cook the rice by “tim”, which served by egg and small salty fish. At Friday and Saturday night, you may visit “Galabo” a long street in front of Pusat Grosir Solo where you can find hundreds tenants of food, batik and traditional souvenir there. It’s open at 6 PM to 11 PM. Find Nasi tim there, also find out Serabi solo “notosuman”, “es dawet”, “es durian”, “wedang jahe (ginger drink)” etc.
For buying many types of Batik, you can go to Klewer market, the biggest batik and traditional clothes market in South East Asia. You can find a lot of cheap batik, because it’s directly taken from the Batik maker. You can get it start from IDR 15.000 (USD 1.5).
If you are curious with the process of Batik making, you can go to Lawean and directly you can find a traditional house that produce hand made batik. You also can try it, make your own batik and experience how to use canting.
Go to Solo, go for traditional experience!!
