Fontana del Papa Tolfa Reviews
Cooking lessons in an idyllic rural Italian setting Oct 20, 2011
Fontana del Papa is a family run bed and breakfast in rural Italy. Although it's just outside Rome, you will feel transported from the city into the relaxed, country atmosphere. Meticulous attention has been paid to renovating the place to make it welcoming to travelers while retaining its old world charm. The grounds feature olive groves, geese, and terraced fountains. The views are stunning, including the ruins of an ancient castle at the top of a hill just a few miles away in the small town of Tolfa.
A true highlight of the experience are the cooking lessons which are the hallmark of this bed and breakfast. Each meal begins with a hands-on cooking lesson taught in the kitchen. While the cook does do some of the side dishes on her own, you will be preparing at least the main dish and become an expert at the different types of pastas and how to make them. The food is all rustic, classic Italian and you feel like these are the meals the family eats even when guests aren't around (though maybe not quite as much food at every meal, you will not go hungry!). Often you feel like you've been welcomed into an Italian housewife's kitchen who's willing to share her age-old family recipes and secrets with you.
We were here for our honeymoon and we cannot imagine a more relaxing place. It was exactly what we had pictured for an ideal Italian getaway. Our room was the Fontana del Papa suite, featuring its own private sitting room, private bathroom with a double shower, and large bedroom with a fireplace and four poster bed. We stayed only a short 24 hours, but if possible you should lengthen your stay to really enjoy the laid-back atmosphere. We hope to return again!
