Swiss Art Pilgrimage Fondation Beyeler Feb 10, 2013
The Beyeler is a must for any art enthusiast in the area of Basel. As it is privately owned, this is not a venue to see the standard surveys one would see in permanent collections of larger museums. Rather it yields only two special exhibits at a time (with a small permanent collection of Calder). I was lucky enough to visit during a Degas exhibition and was blown away by the narrative the foundation organizers were able to weave with the works. This being said, I feel as though a meaningful appreciation of the Beyeler must be accompanied by some comfortable background knowledge of the featured artists.

As for the costs of this private collection, I found the twenty five frank admission quite steep, but then again this is Switzerland, so I suppose it is average for its environment. There is an additional fee for audio guides, which, I feel is an essential element to your experience at the exhibitions. Most works represented are accompanied by text, but I found more intrigue in the additional information of my audio guide. Of course you can also arrange to have a curator guide you if you are in larger groups.

i went twice to basel in my life and it always has been for one reason, to see the exhibition at fondation beyeler. there have been great ones, like jean-michel basquiat (i missed that one),alberto giacometti (i was so impressed!) schiele(missed that one, too), missed so many, and this particularly day i went to basel to see serra and brancusi. having admired serras stability in bilbao, discovered brancusis soft, round beauties recently, i couldn't miss the exhibition of these 2 masters. although the 2 met, they actually have nothing in common regarding their techniques and it has been an audacious idea of mr ernst beyeler (R.I.P), owner of the museum and vivid collector, to put the light sculptures next to the solid monuments of steel, but it worked all out for me :) simply because they are so opposed, it's so easy to move a sleeping muse by brancusi, than a monumental art by serra, but they made it, to put them together in rooms in total harmony! the information material is showing how much effort the whole team put into it! but, at the beginning, there has to be an idea, right? my respect for mr beyeler's enthusiasm, passion for art that makes it possible to discover art and learn from it! R.I.P
