A dump of local history Nov 30, 2014
"Bremen State Museum for Art and Cultural History" is the grandiose and magniloquent official name of a museum in Bremen that is locally known as Focke-Museum. Frankly spoken, it is rather a dump of historical remains that are too valuable for waste incineration. Focke-Museum was reopened in 1953 in a manor house that was not affected by World War II damages, displaying the exhibits that survived World War II. This museum is located in the suburb of Schwachhausen, nine tram stops away from Central Station, but equipped with free parking lots. Entrance fee is quite high (6 EUR). Description is either missing or only available in German.

Unfortunately, the whole exhibition has no narrative. One suite is filled with medieval art, one suite is filled with renaissance art, one suite deals with 19th century and one room covers the whole 20th century with two worldwide wars and several regime changes. Most exhibits are stored in a showroom magazine without any explanation.

Many of the exhibits are well worth seeing, e.g. the original statues from the Rathaus (Town hall), medieval art that was dumped in 19th history, furniture from demolished houses and the remains of abandoned workplaces. The City of Bremen has a long history, and this museum only displays a very tiny spot. Many nearby cities have better local history museums, e.g. Bremerhaven, Hamburg, Hannover and Osnabrück.

If you stay in Bremen for a whole week, it makes sense to spend some hours for this museum.
