Fock Hai Tim Sam Cafe Kuching Reviews
Good steamed buns and bad dim sum Sep 04, 2008
I met my niece Angela for breakfast this morning at a Kuching icon ... the Hock Hai pau (steamed bun) shop that used to be located opposite the General Post Office.
This place is officially Fock Hai (Cantonese transliteration) and has been around since I was a child.
Its fame has been complemented by a brief but unforgettable infamy when a customer supposedly found a lizard's tail amongst the mince in the pau.
The pau here is good ... filled with a big chunk of savoury mince meatball. They don't do the charsiew (BBQ pork ones).
On the other hand, the harkau (prawn dumplings) and siew mai (pork dumplings) were beyond joke. The former was filled with pork (no prawns in sight) and the latter with dense poor quality pork as well. In New Zealand, Australia or Hong Kong, they would have been run out of town.
