Flying to Hanga Roa Nov 10, 2016
We flew to Rapa Nui with Latam from Santiago, which is pretty much your only option for reaching the island unless you are travelling in a tour group with a chartered flight. The flight takes about five and a half hours, but with a -2 hours time difference our 9.35 flight landed around 13.00. The plane was a very new Boeing 787 Dreamliner with novelties (to me!) such as windows with variable degrees of blue tinting that you can adjust according to whether you want to see out or dim the light to watch the screen or sleep. Soon after take-off a breakfast of fruit salad, omelette and a roll was served, with coffee, tea or fruit juice. The seat back screens had a good choice of films and other entertainment but there is no getting away from the fact that for an internal flight, this is long!

We landed early however (by about 20 minutes), on the surprisingly long runway of Hanga Roa's Mataveri International Airport (considered the most remote airport in the world). The length of the runway is explained by the airport's designation in the 1980s as a landing site to be used if a Space Shuttle flight had to be aborted, but it also enables much larger planes to land than would otherwise be the case, of course bringing more tourists.

We had a long wait for our bags as this flight is the main link with the mainland for the islanders and many of them had brought a lot of baggage - boxes, crates and very large cases. But eventually ours appeared on the conveyor belt and we were able to exit the airport. We had pre-paid our national park entrance fee, but if you haven't done so you should pay at the airport, at the counter just before you enter the baggage claim area.

Although our hotel, Puku Vai, was right next to the airport our travel company had arranged a shuttle and we were glad to use this as it was raining a little. We were welcomed with flower leis - we had arrived in Polynesia.
