![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Break in the Virgin and Fly in Style! Aug 20, 2008
I used to get excited about flying until they turned US domestic air travel into the equivalent of taking a Greyhound bus with wings. These days most major US airlines herd you into overcrowded overused planes staffed by tired and cranky flight attendants who find it a challenge to smile and welcome you aboard let alone accommodate you with a beverage or snack. Let's not even mention such luxuries as a pillow or blanket!
Out of the ashes of a crumbling customer service depleted industry emerges a phoenix amongst carriers--Virgin America! An offshoot of the International Carrier Virgin Atlantic they've not only put humility back into flying they brought back Chic! You'd think that you would be paying for this stuff through the nose but you're not!! An average round trip ticket from Vegas to SFO is about $44-66.00 each way!! From the moment you take your first step aboard you feel a sense of ecclectic ambience. Pleasant flight attendants dressed in stylish black uniforms welcome you with a smile. They remind you that you can pick up a pair of FREE stereo earbuds on your way in. You peer into the cabin and for a moment you might think you've stepped into a trendy new Vegas Ultralounge! Hmmm...standard looking A320 Jet on the outside;stylish leather seat mood lit nightclub on the inside...what a concept!! Suddenly that 5+ hour transcontinental flight doesn't seem so bad. Oh and when was the last time you looked forward to hearing about the plane's evacuation procedures? They show the coolest cartoon video that had me laughing my ass off yet learned exactly where the emergency exits and evacuation procedures were...KUDOS!!! But wait there's more. Now you sit and you see RED....that's what they call their onboard entertainment system built into each seat back. It offers hundreds of Direct TV Satellite stations, 3,000 MP3 files, Playstation video games, music videos,Pay per view movies, intranet (and soon internet)chat with other passengers, touch screen ordering of snacks and beverages, and even a flight path locater so you know exactly what part of the country you are currently flying over. Also at each seat are an AC outlet and USB port so you can charge your electronics or not waste your laptop's battery! The only bad thing was that my first flight with Virgin was Vegas to San Francisco which is just about 1 hour! It was the first time I've ever landed anywhere and didn't want to get off the plane! Virgin America currently serves the following cities: LA, San Diego, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Seattle, New York (JFK), Washington, DC (National)...oh and from the rumors I'm hearing...Chicago (O'Hare) very soon! Stay tuned for more on the emergence of Virgin Galactic...the new space plane! |
