Getting ready
posted by:
Jan 24, 2008 - Jan 28, 2008
Let me give you a little set-up:I had been feeling like I really wanted to see snow this winter but of course living in FL, I do not get that opportunity very often. My dad still lives in Minnesota (that is where I grew up as well) and I go visit once in a while, but I was really wanting to go up and visit. So, I was thinking of calling him and asking him to buy me a ticket, when he called me. It is odd for us, b/c our phone calls are usually on holidays, and not many between. I am only going…

Traveling to Brazil
posted by:
Sep 28, 2006 - Nov 16, 2006
When I got to Miami, it was around 6am. I always seem to be more culture-shocked upon returning to the US than I am when I leave it. After going through customs, I immediately started making phone calls to find a center where I could get a vaccination. Nothing was open until 8am. I wandered around the airport and ordered a Cafe con Leche at one of the Cuban cafes. I changed my Brazilian Reais because I barely had any cash and was saddened by how few dollars I got back. I plugged in my …

Weekend Trip to Key West
posted by:
Jun 19, 2007
Well my husband and I decided that we wanted to drive to Key West for the weekend. At the time we lived in Ft. Lauderdale (about 300 miles north of the keys). Well after loading the car up and finding a bed and breakfast in the keys, off we went! The drive was LONG and SLOW because on the way to the keys it's only a 2 lane road. So if you get stuck behind a boat like we did....yeah, it makes it even longer. After getting there late friday afternoon, we headed "down town" to do some explorin…

Greenbacks, gators and hurricanes
posted by:
Jun 15, 1996 - Aug 13, 1996
The first problem I had when I exited Miami's airport was I didn't have change for the bus and the driver doesn't sell tickets.  I had my pack beside me as I asked for "one to the beach" and he said, "Just put the money in the slot."Naturally I was holding up the flow of passengers onto the bus as I turned his instruction over in my head trying to decipher what I had to do.  Obviously my $20 greenback wasn't going to cut it!  I grabbed my bag and reversed against the flow of wo…

yesterday evening, i had one of the situations where a hostel would have been more practical than being hosted by someone.. i was locked out not on purpose of course, but its kind of an interesting situation sitting in front of a locked door in a 100% residential suburban area without a car... luckily i still had the number of another couchsurfer which luckily was at home and saved me from going to the homeless shelter not only she saved me, but we also went to the impressive ca…

I've been back in O'Town for about 1 1/2 weeks and will be heading out for one more short trip with my grandmother to NC & SC to see family. I have two weeks from tomorrow before final take-off. It seems so strange, almost unreal. I kinda feel like I'm dreaming this whole thing up. I'll wake up when I finally land. The next blog posting will be from SA.

I'm gone. Gone gone gone. I'm about as far away as I can possibly be from where I came from ... Surreal doesn't really begin to describe it. Mere hours ago I was riding on Kenny's scooter. Mere hours ago I was leaving a note at Caring's apartment. Mere hours ago I was driving through Seoul ... How in the world did I end up back in Orlando? My last morning in Seoul, I spent with Kenny. We lazed around, talking, laughing, kissing and being normal .. and then when it sunk in that this really t…

4 people in a 2004 Ford Focus.  We load up the car, trunk packed to capacity, and we settle in ourselves. Our average height between us is about 5'10, and I bring that average down significantly.   We are about to embark on a 10 hour drive to Tampa, FL from Raleigh, NC.  4 people, 10 hour drive, very little leg room.  We have to be at the ship by 1 pm so, naturally we leave the night before around 7ish, now me being the paranoid woman that I am naturally assumes that …

Left Lake Okeechobee headed home to do some drying & restocking.  Stopped in Arcadia for breakfast, had to drive around a bit to find the right spot. It is named Wheelers been in the same location since 1929.   Everyone seemed to know each other; it is the epitome of a small southern farm town eatery.  1-The Rev. James Hendry named the town in honor of Arcadia Albritton, a daughter of pioneer settlers who baked him a cake for his birthday. He appreciated it so much he …

ICE!!
posted by:
Dec 13, 2008
The artist were brought over from Harbin, China to design this masterpiece of ICE!! Sculpting ice presents a number of difficulties due to the variability and volatility of the material. Ice must be carefully selected to be suitable for the sculptor's purposes and should be free of undesired impurities. Typically, ideal carving ice is made from pure water. However, clear, transparent ice is a result of the freezing process and not necessarily related to the purity of the water. Clear ice is …
