Surprisingly cool caves Sep 24, 2011

Having lived in Florida for the majority of my life, I know that the only thing underground is sand followed very quickly by the water table. So, I was admittedly skeptical when I heard about Florida Caverns State Park.

These caves are really quite cool though. You have to book a cave tour at the main building... okay really the only building that you see from the parking lot. It was $8 for the tour, and it is guided by a very knowledgable park ranger.

It stays nice and cool in the caves, so this is something you can do in Florida even in the middle of the day in summer. I would probably call ahead and ask if the tours are on for the day because (with the water table being so shallow in FL) the caves flood fairly regularly.

Chances are Marianna, FL (where the caves are located) is not your target destination, but stopping by on a road trip will be well worth the few hours you will spend here.

As a child I remember going to this park every year. It is one of the few state parks with dry (air filled) caves and is the only Florida state park to offer cave tours to the public. The cave has dazzling formations of limestone stalactites, stalagmites, soda straws, flowstones, and draperies. The park is also popular for camping, swimming, fishing, picnicking, canoeing, boating, hiking, bicycling, and horseback riding (The park does not rent horses). Guided cave tours are offered every day of the year except Thanksgiving and Christmas. The tour lasts approximately 45 minutes and is considered to be moderately strenuous. An audiovisual program, touring the cave and other natural areas of the park, is available in the visitor center.

It's a great place to take your family to spend the day.
