It’s two full days before my eventual departure from Florianopolis, having spent the past three life enhancing months and few weeks lamenting my eventual departure at this island paradise in Brazil, and I am having what my Brazilian friend, Mahgoo, would say is a “Saudade” moment. I still haven’t placed the elusive definition, but I feel it’s a plethora of emotions, including melancholy, nostalgia, longing, and déjà vu wrapped up in one. It’s a word that one internal…

People here often give me akward glances as I walk down street, or if I´m sitting in a cafe having an espresso, smoking a cigarette, or writing in this journal. Brazilians are different. It is not a sin to show affection or utter the words, I love you. Public affection is common and couples hold hands like lovers in movies. It is a bit cold today, I can feel the breeze chilling my arms, forming tiny goosebumps. I think, ´I´m a red head now, am I having less fun?´ My father seems to have ge…

After ten days in Florianopolis, my impression of Brazil
(through beach town tinted sunglasses) is that it is a beautiful place
filled with beautiful, beautiful people. No photograph can capture the
way the wind blows by your face and the sun strikes the water on the
Atlantic Ocean and no words can describe how kind and warm the people
are. The men here are much gentler than those in Buenos Aires.
While the macho sentiment still exists, it doesn’t manifest itself in
whistle blowing …

Like Argentina and Brazil, the countries of South Korea and Japan industrialized well after the nations of Western Europe and the United States. Yet, unlike Argentina and Brazil, South Korea and Japan closed their borders to foreign automobile companies, using regulations and import limitations in order to give their respective infant auto industries a chance to blossom. As a result, the domestic auto industries in…

Today was corpus day which is widely celebrated in Brazil, and for this reason EVERYTHING closes, and class got canceled. I took advantage of this by waking up at 6:00AM with a few other girls to hit the beaches. Ever since I have been here I have been waiting for my beach time, and today was the day. We caught the 7AM bus to go to Ingleses, which is a family beach named after the survivors of an English shipwreck who formed a colony there. It is now a very popular hotspot in Floriano…

KERRY - After another night bus journey we arrived in Floripa (as the locals call it) at about 9am. I was planning on meeting a couple of my old work friends from the BMA, here for dinner, but little did i expect the warm hospitality that we received!
I was about to get my bags together and look for a place to stay when i was tapped on the back of my shoulder by someone and heard my name - it was my friend from work Anjos, who had come to collect us from the bus station and take us to his h…

Florianopolis
has been one of my favorite cities that I have ever visited in my life. It is
absolutely breathtaking. The numerous views of the city are spectacular! During
my tenure in Floripa, as the Brazilians call it, I thoroughly enjoyed relaxing
on the magnificent beaches. Accordingly, it is only appropriate that I had one
of the most interesting moments at the beach.
It started
off as a normal, pleasant day. The…

Wow! What else is there to say about this place? We arrived on Saturday in Floripa after dusk and were unable to witness all that the countryside has to offer until the next morning. Sunday we awoke to a beautiful morning where we all went on a tour to see the different parts of the island.
Our first stop was at a little look out on top of one of the mountains. It had a wonderful view of our side of Florianopolis. Next we visited the center of the town where the…

Japan has developed an impressive local automobile industry (Toyota, Subaru, etc.), South Korea as well (Hyundai), India is trying to do so (Tata). Most of the industrialized countries created their national car firms (France, Italy, USA, Britain, Sweden, Germany, Russia). Brazil and Argentina developed a huge automobile industry but through the investment of the foreign companies. Discuss why Brazil and Argentina didn’t create their own local automobile brands.

Bruno and I got to spend a month in Florianopolis over the Christmas holiday to visit our family and friends. We spent every morning walking the beach in Canasveiras and every afternoon on a beach chair wathcing the ocean and taking a dip whenever we wanted.
We got to spend a lot of time with our dear friends, David and Bia. We hiked to Naufragados, went to a Daz concert, and swam in the ocean everyday. It was truey a magical vacation except for the …

I just got back from 2 spectacular weeks in Florianopolis. I got to hike the Trilha do Morro das Aranhas, which was not my first time, but nonetheless, it was flippin' SICK! And I also got to hike the Trilha da Lagoinha do Leste -- my new favorite hike on the island. Florianopolis has 42 beaches, and I have now visited all but one -- on the Ilha do Campeche.
