The day after Christmas we had to get up early again to make our shuttle back. We were catcing a bus to Flores that evening from Antigua. Jenny (J) and I went to see if Karen (K) was doing better, but it turned out she wasn’t the one we needed to worry about. Neil got sick a few minutes after we got back to the hotel and had been quarantined in the bathroom the entire night. He finally came out with 30 seconds to spare before the bus (and his girlfriend…which could exp…

A Quetzal for my Thoughts
posted by:
Sep 08, 2008 - Dec 07, 2008
Fri Nov 9, 2008 I could barely concentrate on work in the morning because I was so excited to leave for Guatemala. Finally, at 2ish, Tanya, Bethany and I boarded a bus to Benque. The $1.50BZ bus ride was really short. We passed the Xunantunich stop on the way and rode a taxi for $3BZ each to the border. Immediately, we were bombarded with money exchangers. Since we had some quetzals from Darlene and didn’t trust the money exchangers, we walked on. (It is customary to exchange money…

Los Amigos

Walked around the entire island this morning.  It took a whopping 30 minutes.  Hot day and I finally got my first Gallo beer.  It's advertised as the national beer of Guatemala.  I guess like the Budweiser of America.  Not that there are very many choices here.  Most places charge at least Q12 for a bottle.  Most places the beer prices aren't much if any more than you could buy in the store.  Boy at lunch got our order confused and brought us …

Not AGAIN!
posted by:
Dec 19, 2007 - Jan 26, 2008
I tried to sleep most of the way to Tikal although the minivan was packed and people were being very noisy. When we got there we milled around for ages before starting the hike so I tried to sleep again. It was almost good it was pitch black cos it meant I couldn't see how much farther there was to go - just one foot in front of the other I kept telling myself! I wasn't feeling sick anymore but just majorly drained from no sleep and no food since 11am the previous day. At around 5am we got th…

Leaving Palenque and on to Guatemala!
posted by:
May 13, 2007 - Dec 21, 2007
After a night in Palenque, we decided to move on. The plan was originally to head down the center of Chiapas, through Tuxtla Gutierrez and check out El Sumidero. I was particularly interested in getting through Guatemala and on to possibly Belize for a day at the beach without having to go through Campeche. After seeing Palenque, we decided to why not check out one of the big daddies of them all. TIKAL! Unfortunately, it was already late in the morning. We had already missed any direct route…

Flores to Guatemala City
posted by:
Apr 26, 2008 - May 26, 2008
I had breakfast near the waterfront, and my server was able to help me secure a bus out of Flores.  The bus was 200Q to Guatemala City with air condition, which is rare in Guatemala.  So i gets to talking to fellow travellers on the bus, and i get a clue as to why nobody was out and about the night before.  Apparently, Flores is the point of debarkation to the ancient mayan ruins Tikal, which is the most impressive in Central America.  Well, that was the first mistake of m…

Flores & Tikal
posted by:
Apr 27, 2008 - Jan 07, 2009
Rising early to head back east into Guatemala, we found ourselves at the bus station. Jumping on a bus that wasn´t quite a chicken bus, but definately wasnt a plush coach, we headed off to the border. After another smooth crossing, we found ourselves in flores. First impressions of Guatemala are definately great. No unsafe vibe at all, and everyone is friendly enough.  Flores was a quaint little town in northwestern guatamala. It was developed as a tourist haven, but if definataly no ca…

We were restless
posted by:
Oct 05, 2007 - Oct 13, 2007
After leaving Tikal, Jen, Kara, Jon and I headed back to our hotel and were trying to figure out what to do. Kara had never been Zip lining before, so we stopped outside the Park and decided to check it out. The platforms were high, extremely unstable, rocked and completely unsecure. I thought I was going to fall, it was great! I think we fit two guides, all of us and a family of three on the smallest platform I have ever seen. Thankfully, I was attached to the small rope t…

Tikal Ruins
posted by:
Sep 09, 2006 - May 30, 2007
The pictures of these amazing ruins kind of speak for themselves. This very out of the way trip was well worth it.  These ruins were inhabited by Mayans for at least 2000 years and was known to be one of the most powerful Mayan civilizations in history.  You may know a bit of Mayan history from Mel Gibsons controversial new movie Apocolypto. ahem.  AAAND we got to see wild monkeys! horray for wildlife.

Adventures in Guatemala - Flores, El Petén, Guatemala
posted by:
Sep 05, 2007 - Jan 07, 2009
Ready for yet another experience.  Now in Guatemala, or as the locals say "Guate", and we can instantly feel the difference compared to Belize.  The atmosphere is a bit more aggressive and chaotic, but nothing we can't handle!! We managed to cross the border hassle-free and even catch a ride to the island-town of Flores. Compared to some of the towns we visited in Belize, Flores is amazingly beautiful.  It's a cute island, that's not too big, so easy enough to get around on fo…
