I am glad to report that Italy has lived up to its expectations so far. The people are incredibly friendly, it’s much harder to find a bad meal than a good one, and the language barrier is rarely an issue. The only down-side I have found to Florence is the narrow breadth of the art and architecture. All of the cathedrals are late-Gothic/early-Renaissance, along with most of the art, which gets a bit mundane after a while. The one thing I really loved about Spain was getting to see 20th Cent…

Florence is boring. sorry for all those who love it here, i'm bored. we basically saw all the sights today, and even took a 3 hour nap in between. i am just waiting for dusk so i can pop open that bottle of wine waiting for me in the fridge. the bugs are biting me too. bleh.
it's so surreal thinking about home now. i've been away only a little bit more than 2 weeks, but since i'm not home, it's hard to remember what's going on there. but then i get all these emails about what's going on, peo…

In August 2006 I traveled to Italy to visit my foreign exchange student we had in high school, Roberta. We toured her home town of Naples and also Siena, Rome, Venice, Lignano Sabbiadoro, Sperlonga and the island of Ischia. After falling in love with Italy, I've decided that I need to get out and travel the world as much as possible.

My highlights from Florence ...
- The statue of David by Michaelangelo. I was really surprised at just how BIG the statue was! Michaelangelo carved David out of one solid block of marble, and it is known over the world for being incredibly realistic and perfectly proportional. I've seen pictures before, but didn't realize that the statue is about 3 times my height! I'm not sure why I thought it was smaller, but now I understood just why it was so famous! It was very cool to see it,…

OK. So when I set up this blog I was thinking that it would be easier than it has been. For one, I thought that I would have more time to sit and reflect and formulate thoughts and load pictures.... but I was wrong!!!! So, it is nearly the end of our trip and I have no stories shared yet but... I will when I get back. Do not fret, my mom and I decided to do this blog after we get home and have some time to put everything together. Just so you know though... I have a full 1G memory card FULL o…

I awoke this morning with Patrice already gone. I didn't think she'd really wake up early just to go to a museum. Back on the coach to be dropped off in the middle of Florence for our day of sight-seeing. Our first thing of the day was to watch a demonstration on Florentine leather. It was actually pretty interesting as we were shown how to differentiate between real and fake leather. Again, as in the previous demonstrations in Venice, we were lead into the show room where they sold a v…

When I was in Florence, we stumbled upon a parade men dressed in tights and matching brightly colored suits (in the antique style). They carried flags with the Florentine symbol (looking a bit like the flur-di-lis) and spun them, threw them, and threw them while they were spinning.
