We dump the car, hop a train, and head for Florence.

July 14, we packed up our lunch and headed for the Ponte Vecchio, the bridge over the Arno built in 1345.  The bridge used to be populated by grocery and meat stalls, but in 1593 the Medicis, the ruling family of Florence, decided that wasn’t classy enough, so they threw out the grocers and installed gold- and silversmiths and jewelers.  And so it has been to this day, although we did spy a tie shop and a leather shop at the far end of the bridge. How did they get in there? &nbs…

Italia Reflection

This last week and through the weekend, I have been reflecting on my experience in Italy that occurred last year. About a week ago when I decided to pick up my old job at the UMD dining center, I had the privilege of working with an international student. Our experiences in our respected countries (past and present) were briefly discussed, while tossing beef gravy on egg noodles. Then it occurred to me; maybe it was fear of alienation that I never reacted on my experience abroad af…

We are in love with Italy!! I do not even know where to begin.  We have eaten some of the best food of our lives, seen the best art, drunk the best wine and been to Mass at the most amazing churches!  I think our photos tell a story of the Florence part of our journey so I will just leave it at that!

After my first year of college, me and my family decided to take a long European vacation that lasted roughly about two and a half weeks. Traveling wise, this was one of the best vacations I've ever experienced... and I encourage everybody to travel to these places sometime in their lives.

I arrived in Florence the night before (March 6th), and went to a hostel, but surprised to learn it was completely booked. What? I thought this was offseason. So I walked around the city, looking for any hotel that has room. Eventually, I found one, called the Hotel Tina. It was kind of like a B&B, and was pretty nice. I was just glad to have a place to spend the night, after being homeless in Venice. The next day, my full day in Florence. I did visit here back in 1993, but I could only re…

In early August I took 10 days to reaquaint myself with some of the greater attractions of Italy. In such a short timespan I hit Pisa, Florence, Roma, the Vatican, Naples, Isle of Capri, Pompei, and Venice. There's just something about sipping cappachino at an outdoor cafe' and people watching that appeals to me.

We have seen so much here it is hard to remember it all!  Especially when I am in an internet cafe and don´t have my journal....  I´ll do my best :) We have been to 5 museums and churches and have not even scratched the surface of what is here.  Day 1 was the Bargello and Uffizi museums, both of which were very crowded, but also very beautiful and filled with amazing art.  Michelangelo was a very busy man here in Florence.  Day 2 was the Acadamia where we saw the i…

I did not get enough time to see this city!  I need more than 6 hours here!  I guess I'll have to save some things to see for next time I visit Florence.  We arrived in the city around 12:30.  After a brief lunch of pizza at the Piazza della Signoria, we visited the Duomo, Ponte Vecchio adn the Leonardo leather shop.  A scoop each of hazelnut and chocolate gelato and a revisit to the Ponte Vecchio ended our brief visit of Florence.
