Under Sir Bartle Frare governership after 1860 mumbai was developed as an ideal port city with the required infrastructure for commerce, trade and Industry. Flora fountain was created in 1869 in honour of the Governer Sir Bartle Frare.
The square hosts Flora Fountain was known as Flora fountain square till 1960. This square was renamed as Hutatma Chowk to remember the members of Samyukta Maharashtra Samiti.
Names of all the people who lost their lives due to police firing are scrioted on the granite slab with a running live flame next to the memory.
We can also see JAI MAHARASTRA, slogan of the state in Hindi at this square. This swuare is located approximately equi distance from CST Station, Church gate station and Gateway of India.
