Flight connections in the USA
Flight connections in the USA Houston Reviews
Beware of the standard connection times offered by airlines Aug 22, 2011
Beware when booking flight connections through any US airport that is International to International, or International to Domestic. Immigration can take a while ... yes, Immigration is required even for the former type unlike in the rest of the world.
Our transit process in Houston Intercontinental from Cancun to Los Angeles took 1.5 hours. Just as well we had a 2.5 hour connecting time as we had about 20 minutes to spare before boarding.
The standard connecting time sold by the airline had been 1 hour ... I must have been psychic to search, manipulate and re-search to get a 2.5 hour connection.
I guess it was just bad luck that the queue was so long. There was no queue when we eventually got to the front. However, my guess is that these queues happen often enough as Kim's arrival in to Los Angeles took 2h45 to clear immigration. Many people missed their connecting flights.
You should do your best to search for a longer connection ... it may or may not cost the same price. I checked with Continental how they would treat passengers who have missed their flights due to immigration delays:
- While they may rebook you if you miss your flight due to transit immigration, this is subject to seats or flights being available.
- You could be waiting for several flights (in the case of domestic) or several days (in the case of some infrequent international flights).
- The airline will not accommodate you in a hotel.
