Fletcher Hotel-Restaurant de Dikke van Dale Sluis Reviews
Old convent turned into chain hotel May 01, 2011
In 1908 the Soeurs de Sainte Ursule de la très Sainte Vierge (Ursulines) founded a convent in the small city of Sluis just outside the ramparts on the road to Sint Anna Ter Muiden, about 15 kilometers north of Brugge. It was destined to become a boarding school for girls, but that was no success. After a few other functions it was turned into a hotel restaurant in 1987.
The hotel restaurant was called "De Dikke van Dale", after the most famous (and thick) dictionary in the Dutch language, which was created by the Sluis local Mr. Van Dale. He was honoured by a golden statue (torso) at the side of the roundabout when entering the city from the west.
It's a pity that the origninal convent was extended by a modern wing at the back. It has lost its small cozy feeling, but turned into a big hotel as part of the Fletcher hotel chain. In this modern wing is a big cheerless room, in which you can have breakfast (buffet with a wide choice).
In front of the hotel there's a courtyard with fountain and terrace. As this terrace is next to the other restaurant you can have a drink as well as a meal, when weather permits.
The stairs of the main entrance lead to the lobby, lounge, library etc. They are located in the original building and show a classy grandeur.
On the left of the reception is a big casino, which is open till late and can cause a courtyard full of cars (hotel guests can park their cars in the parking under the new wing). The basement offers a health center.
Our room was on the upper level of the new wing and had a fine view to the green and open Dutch landscape. The seize of the room was good, the bathroom was rather standard with bath and shower. Our room had a small balcony with seats.
Although not really impressed, the room was OK but not what we expected when ordering a deluxe room.
It's a good hotel and the old walled city center of Sluis is within walking distance, so in that way recommendable. We thought the room was well overpriced, but if you're patient and lucky you can enjoy a last minute deal which lowers the price a lot.
