Not what it seems Jun 02, 2013
Fletcher Hotel Marijke was our choice after searching the internet for a place to stay overnight in the (reasonable) vicinity of Cruquius and Enkhuizen. The place looked lovely on their website but, in hindsight, hotel management forgot to mention quite a few things. So, I’m here to warn you and to share our experience of course.

From the outside the hotel looked as lovely as it did on the internet but I was amazed by how small the reception area was. The welcome at reception desk was warm and friendly and came with free Easter egg chocolates. So, we started off good :) We were directed to our room in a different building that wasn’t lovely at all. This is one of the things management forget to tell you; Hotel Marijke consist of several buildings, most of them built in the late 70’s, but they only show pictures of their main (and good-looking) building on their site.

Inspired by the photos on the net, we paid a little extra to get a bigger room and therefore were disappointed with the room size once we entered our accommodation for the night. Sure, it had everything we needed, but not the space we expected. The room was a little run down, even though refurbishing/redecorating took place not long ago. The chandelier above the bed was missing a few pieces, the furniture had a few damages and I distinctly remember to have found some mould in the bathroom. The room was noisy, you could hear your neighbours and people in the corridor quite clearly. The bed was of decent size and firmness.

The bathroom was small too, only came with a shower. Using the shower was an adventure in its own right because the taps to regulate the water flow and temperature were so complicated, management had found it necessary to put up a sticker with instructions. However, the instructions did not match the actual way to operate the taps. So, it took my wife quite some time to figure out how to get water out of the darn thing.

Breakfast was extra too, but worth the money. The breakfast area was nice and there’s a ‘library’ with reading table that had a peculiar feature; underneath the varnish were some newspapers. So it looked as if there were more papers on the table than there actually were. Making things appear bigger or more abundant seemed to be the hotel’s theme.

Advertised was plenty of parking space (at extra cost) but there were nowhere near enough spaces for the 88 rooms.

It is only because we had some vouchers to lower the price that I can say we still had a pleasant stay. Should we have paid rack rate, we would have been disappointed.
Looks lovely, but this is only the…

Yeah, we always take into account that things on the net look better than in real life, but this hotel overdid it.

As the Latin saying goes, "Caveat Emptor" - Let the buyer beware! Some hotels are shameless in making their establishments look better than they are on the internet!
