Gateway to South Luangwa Oct 28, 2008
The Flatdogs campsite is unique. It is situated very near the main gate of the very interesting South Luangwa National Park right on the border of the Luangwa river. The river is full of crocodiles and hippo's. You can hear the hippo's 24 hours aday as if they are just next to your tent. And indeed, in the evening the hippo's leave the river and walk between the tents. So, if it's dark you better watch out, for a surprising hippo encounter is definitely killing. Luckily there are some guards with lamps to accompany you at the campsite. For the less deardevils there are possibilities to put up your tent high up the trees.
The bar and restaurant are very nice, there's a souvenir shop and a small swimming pool (croc free). During day time I was surprised, that my path was blocked by 4 elephants near the bar. Luckily they left me some rum and coke.... Part of the Southern Africa 2008 travel blog |

Luangwa Game Park was declared on the eastern bank of the river in 1904. The park meant little until 1938, when three parks where defined in the valley: the North Luangwa Game Reserve, the Lukusuzi Game Reserve and the South Luangwa Game Reserve. A …camps outside the park. We stayed at Flatdogs Camp, a very good choise, just outside the parks entrance. No point in paying $400-700 pr person pr night when you can get away with about $200 (meals and safaris included) just by staying 5 minutes… South Luangwa National Park |
