Liking this Viking Aug 25, 2014
Not certain whether it was already late in the season or simply because Monday nights are slow, but we lucked out by hitting this deluxe tourist trap with no crowd at all. We strolled the perimeter of the building earlier in the afternoon, and the ornate decorations left little doubt about what would be discovered indoors. The building is huge, with two floors capable of seating several hundred folks. We found three bars, though only the main one downstairs was operating during our visit. In fact, there were probably no more than seven or eight other parties present across our entire time there.

Fjorukrain has a reputation for serving traditional “Viking” food, so we eagerly reviewed the menu. It was actually fairly standard (hamburgers, BBQ and chicken breast were all there), but did have several epic options and I went that direction. For our group, I ordered a “Viking” starter which included shark (alas, not hákarl, which was not in season), several other pieces of raw or pickled fish and a shot of “Black Death” (think grappa or ouzo). It was okay but nothing stellar and certainly not a value at the exorbitant charge. But hey, it was vacation so no worries.

I ordered a sheep’s head for my entrée and this was not only exotic, it was genuinely tasty. I posted the pictures of my meal too quickly – you can see them in the blog entry this review is attached to. When you get right down to it, all the meat was skin, so it was quite delicious, and a much more substantial portion than I would have guessed. Mike eventually pointed out I hadn’t eaten the eyeball and I hesitated, pondering whether the texture would gross me out. But I figured when in Rome and speared it. Wow, just like any other tasty morsel of my feast.....who would have thought? Laura and Mike ordered the day’s catch (cod) and Jodi scored their tenderloin. Everybody was quite happy with their selection.

We took turns leaving the table and just roaming the vast, uninhabited expanses of the restaurant. They clearly must entertain huge volumes of customers at times, because there is plenty of real estate here and everything is decorated to the max. Highly recommended if you want a good meal and fun times, so long as money is no option!

nice one, Bill! My friends told me I should complain and ask for the rest because the menu said "Sheep's Head"...but they saw it in half...
