Five Things You Need To Do In Smithville Jun 13, 2008
Now Smithville isn't one of those places you go to be seen or paint the town red. It's where you go to kick back, or stroll the streets and just slow it down a bit. As it was been the site for atleast two major motion pictures. The first, Sandra Bullock's 1998 "Hope Floats" and second, soon to be released, "Tree Of Life". Starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn. The first shows life in the small, quiet town in the late 1990's. The second is said to be set in the 1950's. Smithville is Hollywood eye-candy due to the quaint bungalow style homes and farm houses that grace the place. Main Street still has most of its pre-turn of the century facades. It reflects the towns image in a very charming way. Now, as for things to do there. Here's where we start: #5. Main Street. Strolling along Main, you'll find art galleries, antique stores and a couple of mom-and-pop style eateries. Sorrowfully, the "Pockets Grill" is closing there, but is opening a nice patio porch up the street due to open by mid July 2008. (Review to come) #4. Pack a lunch and eat it under the Gazebo by the Railroad Park. Located on NW 1st Street. This gazebo was featured in the movie "Hope Floats". The park also has a playground for the kids and picnic tables (just incase someone else is in the Gazebo!). #3. The weekly Art Exhibit held on Saturdays at the Railroad Park. Also on NW 1st Street, local artists bring their works (paintings, iron work, candles and etc.) and sell them. Some good deals can be found. #2. Eat at Zimmerhansel's Bar-B-Que. Located right past the bridge into town down Loop 230 West. You can't miss it. Painted orange, this place serves up cut-with-a-fork BBQ that's hard to beat. Sides include slaw, pintos, corn and more. Get there early or you'll miss out. And the #1 thing to do in Smithville? Well in my book it's got to be Rocky Hill Ranch. Rocky Hill has everything from bike trails and competitive rides, RV and tent camping, weekly music featuring local and known artists, a yearly Renaissance Festival, a bar with pool table and washer game that's near impossible and a cafe that makes the best damn burger you could take a bite of! Tables inside and out. Yes, Smithville has plenty to see and do. Just don't get in a rush!
