Shelter from the rain. Jan 22, 2011
One of the first things you will notice about the Five Elements hostel is its location. Yes that’s right, it is smack bang in the middle of the Frankfurt red light district! Admittedly it was easier to walk through then those found in Amsterdam, but you may well be 'summoned' as you go to and from the hostel, you have been warned.

As for the hostel itself it was a pretty nice place. The reception team were friendly and very accurate with their advice. The reception room has a few long wooden tables, which I imagine are designed for the hungry travellers eating the hostels food; however I spent most of my time playing poker at them. More comfortable chairs and wireless are on offer in the lobby. The hostel does offer food at limited times, which for a hostel were pretty tasty (though the portion size was not big enough for this hungry traveller,) the price suitably reflects this.

The rooms are very cosy; the beds were the best quality that I have slept in from any hostel! The ensuite bathroom that my room (a 4 bed dorm) was very standard, but had a really good shower, probably better then the shower in my house now, I was very impressed! The rooms were kept nice and clean. The main problem that I encountered here were the lockers. They were very small, not big enough for my bag so only my most valuable items could be stashed away!

The hostel's evening entertainment was quite fun, there was a bar crawl on the first night that was very cheap, and very good fun, though we did have to walk quite a long way before we actually started drinking (the staff supplied some free 'sherbet shots' to make up for this). On the second night we had a hostel run BBQ, which provided free burgers to those of us that were there (or at least, I got mine free, but that might be because I helped cook). Also I should mention the bar, cheaper alcohol (but not by too much), but a fantastic range of cocktails, yippee!

Overall, it’s a good fun place to stay, the staff are helpful and really up for helping show travellers a good time! The rooms are of a high standard and the hostel is kept nice and clean! If you don’t mind the slightly out of the way location, its well worth the stay!
A view of the room from the door.
A pretty naff shot of the bathroom…

In the Heart of the Redlight District Jun 03, 2011
Located in the heart of the Redlight district. About three blocks from the train station. It is surrounded by the seediest places Frankfurt has to offer, strip clubs, brothels, and drug selling on the streets. This means a couple things- walking around by yourself is not such a good idea and the hostel takes security measures to ensure none of the outsiders can make it inside the hostel. The hostel itself is rather nice and room sizes are better than average. The hostel bar is opened 24 hours. The front is one large window so you can sit and enjoy a beer while prostitutes and drugies meander around the streets for your entertainment. Has dog cages in the basement for luggage security and a great billiard table and foosball table. Happy hour is great for meeting people.

Not recommended for the timid or faint of heart. Highly recommended if you want to see what the real Germany is like

Great hostel in the red light district Jul 21, 2011
This hostel is right in the heart of the red light district which won't suit all people, but we were travelling in a group to go a festival so it was perfect for us.

The staff were friendly and patient (always a bonus with large loud groups!) with an excellent bar. The rooms as well were really nicely designed and comfy.

There were security locks on the doors so you could safely watch all the mayhem going on outside :)

Very friendly staff who made everything to help the guest who where trapped because of the volcano on Iceland! Easy to make new friends and good local beer in the bar.

The only bad thing is the location in the redlight district, but on the other hand it is close to the main station.
