Fitzgerald's Bar Dublin Reviews
Come here to drink, not eat Nov 03, 2011
Looking for a traditional Irish pub in which to have a simple dinner, we happened upon Fitzgerald's about eight in the evening. The place was quiet and had an actual fireplace burning in a corner of the room, so we found ourselves a table and settled down. The atmosphere was lovely; warm (a tad too warm for me) and calm, with unobtrusive music and muted television screens showing sports.
The waitress took our orders, and we waited a short while. When the food arrived, my sister got the wrong course - she had ordered chicken pie but got shepherd's pie instead. We thought the waitress had misheard her, and - being impractically polite - we didn't want to make a fuss, so my sister ate what she was served.
The food was typical Irish pub standard - meaning drenched in fat, deep-fried and/or served with obscene amounts of French fries. This is how they serve it in Dublin pubs, so we did like the Romans do and ate.
Then the bill arrived - after quite a bit of attention-seeking on our part - and my sister had been charged for the chicken pie, which was more expensive than the shepherd's pie she had actually had. We tried calling the waitress, but she was apparently busy wiping down the bar or something, because it took ages to get her attention. We explained the problem. The waitress then went to speak to the cook, who went out to search the trash for the remains of our meal in order to make sure that this mix-up had really happened. He obviously couldn't remember what he had made us, despite this being a very quiet night in that pub.
We waited. And waited. Finally, we decided not to spend more of our evening waiting for the staff to sort out a mix-up between the cook and the waitress, so we left the money - the correct amount for what we had eaten - on the table and left.
Conclusion: if you want to eat, don't go to Fitzgerald's. There are many far superior places to eat in Dublin. But for a pint, it's just fine.
