Sitka is a world-class fishing destination. Salmon fishing is the #1 reason to go, but there's also giant Halibut, Ling Cod, and a few others. I've done trips with Island View, one of many companies that provides full accommodations in town plus a boat with crew and all equipment, it's really wonderful and it's a great company. Once you're done fishing for the day, (usually you're out from 4am - 3pm, but it varies) you can spend time in town or relaxing at the lodge right on the water.
The town itself is wonderful, there's a little cafe that serves great authentic Russian style food, it's on the second floor of what's probably the only 2 story shopping center building. Van Winkle's is also a great restaurant, and there's another good restaurant in the Westmark hotel. Great place overall, in the summer the weather is mild with lots of light rain but the temperature isn't very cold. Just don't go wandering out in the forested areas because there is a very high population of bears. There's also a high population of bald eagles which are amazing. |
