Fishing Boats in the Harbour Jan 24, 2017
The fishing boats in the harbour are mostly shrimpers that set out in the shallow tidal waters, let their nets down and fish for Krabben (shrimps). The nets are attached to masts that can be lowered to both sides of the boat.

The harbour used to be open to the tides and fall dry at low tide until the new lock was built. Nowadays it keeps the same water level all day round and is independent of the tides. There are always fishing boats in the harbour, and you can walk quite close to them. The maze of Masts and nets makes good motifs for photos.

Greetsiel is famous for North-Sea shrimps, which are called "Granat" (garnet) here because they turn pink after infusing them in hot water, which is already done on the boats for conservation. A statue in the harbour area has been dedicated to

Greetje the Shrimp as the place's symbol. Shrimps (Krabben) are available in every restaurant. They are usually served on dark bread, or with scrambled eggs.
