Fisherman's Wharf is my favorite neighbood in my favorite city! Feb 29, 2008
I came up to San Francisco to visit some friends last week and had an awesome time. I'd been there in the past but didn't get a chance to fully explore the city. Though North Beach was probably my favorite neighborhood, I have to say I really enjoyed hanging out down in Fisherman's Wharf. I thought it would be like what Time's Square is to New York but it wasn't at all. For one thing, it's gorgeous, with Alcatraz right there across the bay. But what really surprised me was how many cool museums there are. The wax museum was much more interesting than I expected...amazing how realistic those likenesses are! Also, this really interesting place called the Musee Mecanique at pier 45 is a must see. It's like an old-time penny arcade with antique games and thing. Very cool! Also; the U.S.S Pampanito, a World War II submarine museum and memorial is a must see for anyone interested in US history or old ships. We took a cable car right over the hill to Union Square where we had an amazing dinner and found a great little comedy club. Looking forward to exploring SOMA and the Mission District on my next trip!

I know fisherman's wharf is a huge San Francisco tourist attraction, but to be honest I've never had a great experience there. The whole place just feels too touristy, the shops are overpriced, and the clam chowder isn't even that spectacular. Also, it's sort of a hassle to get to, and there's nothing else to do around the immediate area. It was cool to visit once, but after living in the bay area for 5 years now, I have found few compelling reasons to return!

People use words like touristy to describe poular, activity-laden neighborhoods like Fisherman's Wharf. I get that but you have to admit that often times tourists just go where the most sights and attractions are. In the case of San Francisco, most "tourists" want to see the city's flavor and the reality is that a lot of it lies down in Fisherman's Wharf.

I went to Fisherman's Wharf with some pre-conceived ideas about it being too crowded or too touristy but actually had a blast. There were so many cool museums and attractions that I honestly didn't want to leave.
