Fish Boil Ephraim Reviews
Unique to the Peninsula, experience a traditional fish boil. Jul 01, 2007
There are about 14 places throughout the short stretch of the peninsula where guests can experience a fish boil which is the only place in North America where it can be experienced.
The Old Post Office Restaurant is in Ephriam, WI - north of Sturgeon Bay approximately 30 miles.
Situated across the street from Green Bay (the actual Bay and not the city of Green Bay) diners can choose to have dinner indoors our outdoors.
The cost at this restaurant was $18.95 for adults. Plan to arrive about 25 minutes before seating time as there is a line to get your name in for a table. After being assigned your seating choice you will move to the back of the property just off of the parking lot where the fish boil occurs.
With campfire bench seating for about 40 people watch and listen as Boil Master Earl talks about the tradition, history, and process of how and why a fish boil happens. He is a polished speaker and entertaining. He clearly enjoys his job. A tip jar is available for those who wish to reward him for his entertainment. Photos and/or videos are permitted.
Once the fish is cooked the crowd is dismissed to the dining area where a line forms for buffet style.
Every patron gets the same thing. Take a place and move down the line where the owner of the restaurant gives everyone 2 or 3 whitefish steaks, several potatoes and several whole onions, and covers everything in ladles full of clarified real butter (not necessarily for those who are heart healthy!) The bread table is self serve. You may choose from Pumpkin, rye, white, and lemon breads. Coleslaw or pasta salad are also available.
Once seated your server will offer to de-bone the fish for you. I had not seen how this was done prior to being asked so I refused as it just seemed unusual, however, I later saw that servers here are skillful in deboning by using 2 forks to remove the bones and the skin. Take them up on the offer as it is interesting to watch. Beverages are also included with the meal: coffee, lemonade, ice tea, or milk.
Ephriam is a small Moravian community so alcohol/wine/beer is not served here. Though I saw a man bring is own bottle of wine, I know they don't serve it but am not sure if it is legal to bring your own according to city bylaws.
After dining on fish you can enjoy the best part of dinner, the dessert. Home made tart cherry pie - or ala mode' if you prefer for an additional $1.50.
**hint: If you prefer a quieter dinner without children request a seat outdoors near the front porch. The patio is butted against the pool area and there are always tons of kids enjoying the pool (loudly) during the dining times. Indoor seating is also ok - choose to be seated in the room where the line forms instead of where the buffet tables are - that way you will avoid sitting in the middle of all the activity of people bumping into you.
