Our Adventurous Fijian Holiday.
Our good friend Jonathan, invited us to Fiji to stay with his family and in his village, which is in a very remote part of the interior of Fiji, where white tourists just do not go. We knew this was going to be an adventure, but didn’t know just how much of an adventure! Just getting there was an adventure!
Before we left New Zealand, Erle had an accident and tore the calf muscle very badly, so three weeks before we were to leave, Erle was on crutches going…

My journey started at Perth Domestic Airport at 4am in the morning to find that they were replacing some of the security scanning devices and as such the queues for all flights were queued twice around the airport. Just what I need at this time in the morning! As a knock on, all flights were delayed and once my aeroplane had the left the ground i felt a great deal of relief. From Perth to Sydney, then because of the lst time practically straight onto my next flight to Fiji.
Greeted by BULA …

In the transit lounge in Fiji, just an hour from flying to Australia, it feels like we are already there. People with strong accents and thongs all around; Chicken Twisties and Cadbury Chocolate for sale at the kiosk; a branch of ANZ for currency exchange; Bryce Courtney books on the shelves of the bookshop; New Idea and Woman's Day on the magazine rack; and WheatBix, meat pies and lamingtons available at the breakfast joint. I feel culture shock coming on...

In this realm of dreams that I have so suddenly found myself, I find myself at a lack of words to describe the emotions and excitement I am feeling. You never really realize how absolutely large the Pacific is until you have to fly over it. I flew out of Vancouver on the 29th of October and arrived in Nadi, Fiji on the 31st at 5:40 am. Within 3 hours, I was on a bus to…

After arriving at the airport and spending a few hours resting at a day hotel, it was time to begin looking around Nadi. Although a large city by Fiji standards it is fairly small by US standards. Interesting mix of cultures and shops.

A very quick entry with the last 15 minutes of my very expensive internet time... The 2 days I spent on Beachcomber Island were great. The weather cooperated so I got to work on my tan a lot! It was nice to have our tight-knit little group from the FeeJee Experience all together - there were 4 guys and 7 girls. We layed in the sun during the day and then partied at night. I'm back in Nadi now trying to kill several hours before my 4am flight to Auckland and Chris…

BULA!!! I don't think I'm ever going to forget that word. Especially as Em keeps shouting it at me randomly and asking me to do the Bula dance, which is the 'traditional' after-dinner party dance in the Yassawas and very much like The Macarena, in fact I don't know which came first...
Shattered from our overnight flight and missing Hawai'i alot, we stayed at New Town Beach for two nights and the first day was practically written-off as we caught up on selep and only surfaced for a gr…

Day 2 In Fiji
So I woke up at about 4:00 in the morning (slowly getting used to the time zone) and watched the sunrise. Very nice. Then Melissa and I went to pick up Neno to go… skydiving! Originally it was supposed to be Melissa and I go up , and then Neno, but due to different complications, I had to go up with Neno. Fun part here – Neno is brazilian and has nice brown skin. HE jumped first. So I got to see what Neno would look like white. Then Rob (my tandem jumpmaster) wiggl…

I spent 2days travelling around Lombok on a motorbike and given the opportunity, I would've given myself more time. This Island is BEAUTIFUL! The sceney-magnificent. It's much more chilled out than Bali. The people are just as friendly and the whole 2 days we only came across 1 other small group of tourists. Crusing on the motorbike with local Andi, and new friend Sam, the facial expressions we saw from people never seeing tourists before was unforgettable. I have never made so many heads turn.

Our plan for Fiji was to do very little, in preparation for hitting the east coast of Australia hard in a few days time.
We had booked in at all-inclusive Mango Bay Resort on the Coral Coast, which we had reservations about cos it looked a bit Butlins by the flyer and seemed fairly good value for money, seen as we got all meals included, too. We weren't to be disappointed. The resort was only about a year or two old, with really nice rooms, a nice restaurant, a nice seaside location and qua…

My time in Fiji was really really relaxing! The first day/night I stayed on the main land in Nadi. It was a really nice backpackers. However, the beach was not nice at all and the water was really dirty....not what you expect from Fiji. Well, I thought, ok I am going to the two other islands the next day and there the water and the beaches must be nicer.....otherwise, where do they get the pictures for the catalogues from....
The next morning, a bus took us to Denerau Port where we caug…

What kind of image do you conjure up in your head when people mention the men of Fiji? For me it's a brick shithouse rugby giant with limbs like tree trunks and a voice deeper than the Pacific ocean. Imagine my surprise therefore when, upon arrival at the tourist info desk at Nadi airport, I'm shepherded into the orbit of Poni the travel agent. Poni is a Polynesian fat period Dale Winton, a flower adorning his voluminous afro and a garish Hawaiian shirt covering a sizeable paunch. "Ooh I'll c…
