Figueras is the capital of the Alt Empordà region within the Girona province of the Catalunya region. It is often considered a day-trip from Barcelona or Girona and is easily accessible by both bus and train.

The city is best known for being the birthplace and hometown of the Spanish surrealist painter, Salvador Dalí. The city also houses the Teatre-Museu Gala Salvador Dalí, a large museum designed by Dalí himself which is the main attraction of the city.
