Fiesta Grande de Enero May 30, 2012
Chiapa de Corzo festival “Fiesta Grande de Enero” is fantastic two – three week fiesta in January, famous for dancing crowd with the masks that make them look like Spanish conquerors and rulers. Thousands of locals together with whole families dance around the streets moving like river through the town. Men wear poncho over whole body (this is happening in the heat of Mexican south), wooden mask on the face, huge sponge on the head, and metal maracas in the hands. Bunch of different bands play all over the town and there is also bunch of drummers and occasional trumpet mowing along with the masked crowd. Field next to the main church gets filled with different games, rides and food joints. Church is cool too, and they will allow you to climb up to the cupola for a small fee. When you get there, join the fun and jump around like possessed goat… Enjoy
