Festival Of Kissing Roquemaure Reviews
Enjoy Roquemaure around Valentine's day! Aug 28, 2011
After the terrible story of the cursed bread in Pont-Saint-Esprit involving the CIA(see above),I would tell another one but more romantic involving the wine,a Saint and love!
The phylloxera,a vine disease was introduced in France for the first time around 1860 in the area of Roquemaure. In 1866 the vineyards became diseased and died. Two years later the whole of the lower Rhone valley was infected leading to poverty and misery most of the local people. As at that time many people believed that the Saint relics are protective, one rich landowner bougth in Rome some relics, the relics of the patron Saint of the lovers,Saint Valentine. They were carried in 1866,1600 years after his decapitation to the 14th century collegiale church of Roquemaure:it is said that within 4 years the vines were cured??
To relive the arrival of these relics, for more than 20 years,Roquemaure hosts every year around the 14th February,Valentine's day a kissing festival,la fete du baiser in French.
The celebrations consist of a true historical reconstitution of the 19th century with a parade of more than 800 locals dressed in 1868 style or as priests and nuns kissing each other,as well as the tourists, the shops and the streets taking their olden appearance and the relics are symbolically paraded.
Roquemaure becomes then the capital of lovers
