Fes is one of the four so-called "imperial cities" (the others are Marrakech, Meknes and Rabat). It is separated into three parts, Fes el Bali (the old, walled city), Fes-Jdid (new Fes, home of the Mellah), and the Ville Nouvelle (the French-created, newest section of Fes). The Medina of Fes el Bali, the largest of the two medinas of Fes, is believed to be the largest contiguous car-free urban area in the world. Fes el Bali is classified as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The University of Al-Karaouine was founded in 859 A.D. and is the oldest continuous operating university in the world.

Fes, the ancient holy city of Islam

We spent a very very long day walking through and exploring the ancient 9400 twisting and turning lanes of ancient Fes. It was incredible...I felt as though I stepped through a time warp back into the 9th century. We started off by driving to the top of a moutain overlooking the ancient city for some pictures and to grasp the size of it. It looks so peaceful from above but is absolutely not! Here was our travel plan from Gate 1 for the day: Day spent wandering through the narrow alleys of countless souks (bazaars), tanneries, and remarkable Islamic architecture. Tonight, enjoy a Moroccan dinner in the Medina including entertainment.
