We spent a very very long day walking through and exploring the ancient 9400 twisting and turning lanes of ancient Fes. It was incredible...I felt as though I stepped through a time warp back into the 9th century.
We started off by driving to the top of a moutain overlooking the ancient city for some pictures and to grasp the size of it. It looks so peaceful from above but is absolutely not! It is a flurry of constant activity... as I soon found out.
Our next stop w…

Here was our travel plan from Gate 1 for the day:
Day spent wandering through the narrow alleys of countless souks (bazaars), tanneries, and remarkable Islamic architecture. Tonight, enjoy a Moroccan dinner in the Medina including entertainment.

It was only 2 weeks and a few places, but in that time, I fell in love with a small mountain town, felt lost among the big city world of Fez, rode horses into the country for a starry night on a farm, and embraced and respected the time of Ramadan..

Fes is one of Morocco's Imperial cities, and was founded in 789 AD ... growing to be the largest city in the world (it is believed) around 1170 to 1180 AD. Today the old city is a tourist magnet ... it is full of alleyways packed with just about everything you can imagine, eg. spices, meat, hardware etc.
It is also home to a cooperative tannery where leather is cured naturally using products like pigeon droppings then coloured with natural dyes.
While the old c…

Old Fes is described as "one of the most complete medieval cities left in the world today and the spiritual heartbeat of Morocco". About 300,000 people still live in the medinas of Fes el Bali and Fes el Jdid.
This morning we went on a guided tour with Mustafa which included a ceramic pottery factory, the famous leather dye pits, the historical Kalrouan Mosque medersa, and of course some of the best shopping spots in the medina. As you will see, I was not able to take many pictur…

Fes - Ancient Imperial city of Maroc... Unforgettable for many reasons...
What a great day of differing scenery and amazing sights. From Midelt we drove through the Middle Atlas mountains - Oak and Cedar forests, farmland, Berber shepherds with their herds of sheep and goats, all green due to recent rains. It was sad to see so many of the giant cedars dead or dying due to disease. A real problem in this area.
Stopped at a pass where a local Berber family sit waiting f…

A very old imperial city and the cultural centre of morocco ( apparently). The tour began with a stress filled walking tour though the Fes Medina. The medina is huge - bounded by 16km of walls. It contains over 9000 tiny streets in a huge maze complete with shops, mosques, houses and schools all within the walls. Rachid (our guide) insisted that we would be able to navigate around on our own but we weren't convinced. We stood out like sore thumbs 4 asians, 6 anglos and our moroccan tour guide…

We actually arrived in Fes the prior evening, where the drinking really commenced! Yes, you can get alcohol in Morocco, even though technically it is illegal not to mention against the Islamic faith, especially during Ramadan. Once again after a quick stop at the hotel to check-in and freshen up, we grabbed some Petit Taxis and headed to the Palais Jamais (Hotel Sofitel) for pre-dinner drinks. A six course dinner followed at a awesome restaurant near the hotel, which made me regret eating s…
