Free stuff to do! May 21, 2010
The farthest trip I took from the resort was to the Hatteras-Ocracoke FREE ferry car/people transport. In February the Ferry leaves every hour, during tourist season it leaves every 20-30 mins. The Ferry trip is 40 mins, you can stay in your car or go to the upper deck to watch birds from inside or outside. One sandbar was loaded with black pelicans. So time-wise you’ll need to allow for travel to the Ferry and over and back again, plus whatever you want to do on the island. They have wild horses on the island (corralled) and have paddock feeding times – 7-9am and 4-6pm. We got there at 4 and they had just been fed, so we got to see them eat. The island has a few tourist sites, among them the small, squat white lighthouse (easy to miss) I don’t believe anyone is allowed to climb it. They have a second Ferry one can pay to take to other areas, but I didn’t do that, I try to focus on free stuff. The Ferry on the Hatteras side had a visitor center aka gift shop and nice restrooms and brochures one could pick up. Don’t ask the staff where to eat on the island – they aren’t allowed to recommend.

One could hit the Ferry and on the way back to the resort stop at Hatteras lighthouse and Bodie (they pronounce it Body) lighthouse (Bodie not open in 2010), but that would make a long day, especially if one is climbing the lighthouses. All the lighthouses that had gift shops open had nice restrooms FYI.
