Ferney-Voltaire is named after its most famous inhabitant. Fernex was renamed Ferney-Voltaire after the French Revolution to honor the French writer and philosopher who lived there from 1759 to 1778. Voltaire had purchased the estate of Ferney right on the border with Switzerland and his castle is now the main attraction in town.

With its proximity to Geneva and the presence of the CERN nearby (the world's largest particle physics laboratory), Ferney-Voltaire is a very cosmopolitan town and is the home of the Lycee International.

The Geneva airport of Cointrin has an exit leading directly to Ferney-Voltaire which can almost be looked at as being part of this Swiss city's suburbs.
