Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Feira de Artesanato de Ipanema - This is one of those things you put hot dishes and pots on. They had many of them with cool designs made with seeds and beans!
Feira de Artesanato de Ipanema - A leather purse.
Feira de Artesanato de Ipanema - A jewelry box made out of some kind of stone. I believe this comes from the state of Minas Gerais.
Feira de Artesanato de Ipanema - Earrings made with clay and gemstones.

Haggling? Will it be there next time? Apr 11, 2012
This review is either for the Hippie Fair or for another flea market-esque place I went to on Copacabana beach while I was there in 2005:

I am so not the queen of haggling. I tried to haggle a price for a peice of leather that had a map of the Caribbean and Brazil burned into it. I knew I would not find this particular map anywhere else (they had a variety of maps of South America and Brazil, but few that included the Caribbean). I couldn't get it down to a price I was comfortable with (and now-a-days, I could probably afford it; not as broke as I was a few years ago). I said I'd come back another time and I did, but it was gone.

If you travel somewhere and don't plan to go back or don't know how long it will be before you go back, grab an item you'd like when you see it. Be smart, haggle and try other places, but before you leave, settle on what you want.

Addendum: I went back to Rio 7 years after this year review and was able to get some great small paintings (was tempting to get a large one, they were affordable) and I bought a berimbau for R$ 65 (US$ 40). I loved it, but also wanted a pandero, but that sucker was about US$ 100 and I just couldn't do it. Great fare-full of magnets, clothing, jewelry, art and some other items. Hooray!

This market is more commonly known as the Hippie Fair. It takes place on Sundays from 8am to 2pm in a big square in Ipanema. I believe the name "Hippie Fair" is leftover from 60s and 70s but besides a few items, it's not really a hippie fair. You can find anything here from all over the country- leather goods, jewelry, clothing, carvings, paintings and many other things. If you get there late, some vendors might be closing down their stalls so get there early if you want to do some serious shopping.

Things are generally cheap, but if you are traveling to other parts of Brazil, take note of the fact that many of the things will be cheaper (and sometimes better quality) in other places. Like any other handicraft market in Brazil, bargaining is expected here. What is really nice about the Hippie Fair is great selection of things they offer. Definitely make a stop here to pick up gifts and souvenirs and grab a bite to eat at one of the stalls!
