Explaining a peculiar island Sep 18, 2014
Fehmarn-Museum Burg is located in a half-timbered historic house. 23 rooms are explaining the peculiar history of a popular holiday destination, beginning with flintstones. Since the Middle Ages, this island was a self-governing republic under Danish sovereignty. The church of Landkirchen served as meeting point for farmer's assembly. In 19th century, steamships enabled better transport of agricultural goods, especially milk, thus big farmers were able to make a fortune. Shipping became another important local industry. Some rooms are dedicated to local craft traditions. One room is dedicated to keep the history of monarchs, a group of outlaws / outsiders who met in local pubs. One room is dedicated to local superstitions which were widespread until 20th century.

Since it is a historic house, visitors are asked to climb the historic stairs carefully. All descriptions are only available in German, since the majority of visitors comes from Germany.
