Federation Square - The Starting Point Aug 16, 2011
Federation Square serves as the public meeting point, place to take pictures, and a good starting point to get information for visitors. At the lower floor there is a large visitor information centre, where you can get city maps, or brochures, or talk to the staffs. It is also very close to the Flinders Train Station, and within walking distance from CBD area. Both the free city circle tram and the tourist shuttle bus pass this place. Tours busses usually start departing from this place as well. Next to the Federation Square is the Ian Potter Centre, the art gallery also known as NGV-Australia. If you want to have further walk, nearby this area is the NGV-International in St. Kilda Road, the Shrine of Remembrance, the gardens, the Eureka Tower, or just have a relaxing stroll by the riverside.

This place is essential if you're spending more than a couple of days in Melbourne.

We went back to the tourist information office here several times.

It's huge, staffed by dozens of friendly, eager staff who want to make your visit the best possible.

You can ask them anything, and they'll get you the answers and the maps, brochures, deals, advice, etc. to go along with it.

The displays there will also give you many ideas if you're not sure what you want to see.

It's a must for every visitor and I cannot recommend the staff highly enough for their genuine dedication to their mission.
