Tuscany, the green way: lovely 'agriturismo' accommodation May 12, 2013
An absolutely wonderful change from the usual hotel accommodation!

On our 2013 trip through the north of Italy, we stayed here for a few nights. In the north of Tuscany, close to places like Lucca, Pisa and Florence, the Galeotti family runs this very nice accommodation. On the slope next to the gorgeous old village of Pietrabuona, there are a number of beautifully renovated and maintained houses that belong to the "Podere" Galeotti. Every housa has been divided in one or two units, which all have their own facilities, like living room, bedroom(s) and bathroon(s), as well as their own private terraces, all with a view over the beautiful valley of "Svizzera Pesciatina" ("Pescia's Switzerland").

The location is really nice. It is just north of Pescia, in a unique part of Tuscany, where you find a range of green mountains, which somehow contrast to the rolling hills of the more southern part. Because of the mountains to the north and west, the valley is secluded and relatively protected from the rains and cold, even though the lush green shows that it is certainly not too dry. From this location, Florence, Pisa, Lucca and even the mediterranean coast are all within a relatively short drive (Lucca being the closest by, the other places at 1 to 1.5 hours).

After you check in at the main house, Ms. Galeotti or one of her assistants will drive in front of you into the valley, then up the winding road through the forest, to show you to your unit.

The houses all have their own name, and they have done a wonderful job to divide them into two or three units each, every one with enough privacy, even when sitting outside at your own terrace overlooking the valley. Every unit has a traditional but well equipped kitchen with stove, oven, fridge and the usual kitchenware and amenities. All the units have a living room or sitting area, and depending on the number of bedrooms each unit has at least one fully equipped bathroom.

Efforts have been made to keep the traditional look and feel, while at the same time creating a comfortable place to stay. The furniture and beds are not posh, just comfortable, but what stands out is the view from most units into the valley, and on to the old fortified town centre of Pietrabuona.

Although the village is connected by bus to Pescia, which has a train station, you would need a car to enjoy the area around this place and the rest of Tuscany. The walk from the most remote units to the village will take some 20 minutes downhill.

In the village there are a few simple eateries, a bakery shop (go there in the morning to buy their fresh Italian bread!), a small grocery and that's it. For more restaurants and supermarkets, you have to be in nearby Pescia, about 6 kilometers away.

Obviously the village is quiet, there are no bars or disco's, so if you are looking for that, this is not your place.

About half way at the slope, the property has an outdoor swimming pool to be used by the guests, also with a nice view.

In the main house down in the valley, they sell delicious local products, like salami and ham from the farm's own special breed of Cinta Senese pigs, which grow up grazing in their chestnut groves, and on request, a butcher will prepare spare ribs or other cuts of this fresh meat for you to cook or barbecue at your apartment. They also sell their own olive oil, chestnut flour and honey. The Fattoria does not have its own restaurant, but Mrs. Galeotti will be happy to give you the best insider tips you can wish. English is spoken.

We felt this was one of the nicest places to experience Tuscany countryside life, with ample privacy, and not being surrounded by hordes of tourists.

I lost the pictures inside the unit which were on my phone, but you can see them on their site. We stayed at the house called Zano. The pictures are accurately showing how it really looks. http://www.pietrabuona.com/default.asp?ln=en
