Fat Pelican Carolina Beach Reviews
Beer Love Jun 04, 2010
My field trip concluded with an after dinner brew at perhaps the coolest dive bar in the world, the Fat Pelican. The Pelican augments its rambling interior with a sandy, fenced in back yard (Pelican Beach), but both are cluttered with objects d’junk that will amuse for quite some time. Of course you need to get a beer before perusing the knick knacks, so duck into their expansive beer cave and select from over two hundred different options! This is the most awesome aspect of the Fat Pelican, and it can take some time choosing the perfect concoction to tickle your palate with so many brews to choose from. You bring your beer back to the bar and pay for it there – please be aware that it ain’t cheap!
I am ashamed to confess how TB has humbled me, because I entered the cave this evening and waited until I was the sole occupant to snap some pictures. This was particularly embarrassing because they have monitors in the main bar area revealing what’s going down in the cave…so I must have looked like a real nut case. Not such a problem as this is an incredibly friendly venue.
The juke box at the Pelican is a treasure trove of classic rock and the patrons usually keep it primed. Tunes are pumped throughout the rambling interior (the extensions are of incredibly shoddy construction and I have no idea how this place passes building codes) and exterior, so there is always a happy vibe thumping. The back rooms are populated with a remarkable miscellany of seats, all in various stages of disrepair, with a huge black lab (Attaboy) patrolling. I took my buddy Space here last fall and over my objections, he brought his dog along – Attaboy is an exceeding gentle pooch, but trying to escort another dog into his home turf brought out a rather rabid response, so we didn’t go in, lol. Attaboy has this remarkable aptitude for navigating his domain and I am always startled when the one of the two doors to Pelican Beach buck open and Attaboy waltzes through.
On the off chance you get to visit Carolina Beach in the winter, the Fat Pelican has a strong local following and still thrives beyond tourist season. What is really special about this time of year is that despite nobody venturing outdoors to Pelican Beach, they have several wood stoves that fit in exceptionally well with the décor reminiscent of grandma’s house. A fun diversion in a swell little beach town.
July 6th, 2013 update - of course I had to take John & Jody to visit the Fat Pelican during their visit and they became the latest fans. John swiped my camera and took some fun pcitures, so I thought I would add them to the review. C'mon down, the Pelican is still serving up good times!!!
