Falsled Kro Sep 16, 2014
It takes around 3 hours drive to go to this place from Copenhagen if you drive directly, unlike us which takes around five hours drive to arrive at the inn, since we did a little sightseeing along the way. The inn located around 10 km from Faaborg town centre and the Svanninge Bakker Nature Reserve and its golf course is around 10-minute drive away. Odense city centre is 25 km from the inn.

Fasled Kro's history dates back to the 16th-century and this inn build from traditional house in Denmark with a special roof and the inn is famous for it is high end restaurant which serves Danish and French dishes with a focus on local seasonal ingredients.

When we arrive in the inn late afternoon, the receptionist usher us to the lobby next door for a refreshment and tea or coffee. The lobby was decorated with old style design with big fire place and plenty of sofa, chairs and lazy boy to sit and relax, it feel really homey and very beautiful room. After seated and order coffee, we get delicious mix berry cake with cream and also our coffee. Usually I do not like cream much but this cake was really delicious and I devour the whole cake.

After finished our cake and feel refresh, we head back to the reception to check in and get the key to the room.

Our room located at different building from the restaurant, which looks like a small bungalow and the room itself facing the garden and the restaurant.

We have a suite room with our own terrace facing the garden, separate living room with it is own fire place, a couple of sofas and plenty of cupboard and bathroom on ground level. It feel very homey. The bathrobes and slippers provided freely inside the bathroom. Our bedroom located at the first floor with a couple of windows facing the garden. The mattress was very comfortable with plenty of pillows. The room size probably around 60 sqm.

On the table was a box of chocolate and nuts provide freely for us. The service was excellent, from the reception to the restaurant staff, very tentative. The minus point probably the toilet, since the bathroom located at the ground floor and the bedroom located upstairs, and I have to go up and down when I need to use it, not convenient, other than that, everything was beautiful.

After we put our luggage we check out the area around the inn since so many beautiful old houses with thatch roof nearby and I really like it. The beach is nearby, less than five minutes’ walk and it was very peaceful there. It was a bit chilly at night time and we did use the fire place.

The room cost almost €1,000 per night including breakfast and gourmet dinner for two people.

The dinner was excellent and plenty of food. I will write a separate review about the restaurant.

Breakfast was very nice and serve at different room from the restaurant where we had dinner.

When we check out, we had a goody bag as well which include a hotel calendar book (also some recipes), a couple bottles of mineral water, a small bag of candies and Turkish delight.

The old inn at the water Sep 16, 2014
Back in the old days the Danish country side was dotted by many different small inns called a kro which had gotten a royal privilege to open the establishment for overnight guest and the distillation of the traditional Danish alcohol brændevin - also known as snaps. Today there are no longer any privileges for the old inns but many of them are still open for business serving as both accommodation and a restaurant.

The most famous of these old inns is probably Falsled Kro - it is located down close to the water next to an old harbor. The harbor used to attract many ship owners so back in the day the area around Falsled Kro was pretty wealthy. This might be one of the reasons why the old inn is actually pretty big with a traditional courtyard forming the traditional heart of the inn but the inn had grown outside this small restricted area to include a newer building just behind the courtyard.

The inn could have been just another inn if it hadn’t been bought by the Lene and Sven Grønlykke back in 1969. But the couple was determined to make a difference and create one of the best restaurants in Denmark which back then was somewhat of a culinary backwater without any major gourmet restaurants in Copenhagen and out on the country side far from Copenhagen the idea of fine dining just wasn’t something anybody had even dreamt about before. The next year the inn reopened with a couple of French chefs responsible for the kitchen and the inn grew into one of the most famous eateries in Denmark.

The success of the inn had meant the place has outgrown its original seize and bought up several old houses across the street from the inn. We were fortunate enough to stay in the annex of the historic inn in what was call a big double room - all except one of their rooms are big and then there are a few suites on top of this. The room actually had two levels with the bed itself located on the top floor in a small room with only enough room for the bed a few old furniture. The toilet and shower was down stair which could be a little inconvenient since the stair was dark and steep so if you need to go down during the night you would need to be cautious. Down below was the toilet and shower and a nice little living room with a couch and a fireplace. They supply woods for the fireplace so you can sit down in the couch after an excellent dinner and relax in front of the fireplace if you don’t find the fire too hot on a summer day since the old inn follow the style of other traditional Danish hotels and have no air-condition.

Outside the room is a small garden with a table where you can sit and enjoy the big open garden in front of the tiny private garden for the room. We didn’t really come early enough to take advantage of the table out front and I suppose most people won’t really have the time to enjoy this since a major focus of your stay will be sitting in the restaurant which by the way has a great view of the garden as well.

In the morning we had breakfast in the restaurant. It was an exceptional breakfast - first time I had fried quail eggs for my breakfast - of course one quail egg wouldn’t do since too small so we had three each to go along with the homemade sausage and bacon.
