Falls Theater River Falls Reviews
first run movies for super low price Jul 16, 2009
The Falls Theater in downtown River Falls is well known for showing first run movies at very low prices. This week the 6th Harry Potter movie in the series was released and is already playing at the Falls Theater. We got there 40 minutes early and already the line stretched past one business and the park.
The Falls Theater was built in 1927 and became the theater it is today when Stan McColluch purchased and ran the theater in 1972. Stan's goal was to provide cheap family entertainment to his beloved River Falls. For most of my childhood, movies were $2 for adults and $1 for children. Only recently has the price risen to $3 for adults and $2 for children. That is due partly to the remodel of the theater and installation of newer (more comfortable) seats.
The theater only has one screen and generally two movies are shown per night. Typical length movies are shown at 7 pm and 9 pm with occasional showings at 5 pm, weekend matinees and 3 hour movies with only one showing per night. Get there early because lines start forming for popular movies up to 45 minutes in advance! We estimated seating at 275 people.
Snacks are served at an old fashioned popcorn counter with fresh popcorn popping in the corner and a wall of candy bars on the back. Prices are very reasonable. A large popcorn is $1, but there are no free refills.
Stan died a few years ago, but his family is carrying on the tradition and running the theater. The family works very hard and keeps the place in good shape. The floor is often sticky after the first movie but that is about the only thing you can complain about for a $3 movie. It is a nice, friendly atmosphere that really brings together the community and people from nearby towns.
