Another decent country bar. Mar 07, 2017
Having exhausted the tourist possibilities of Falher which basically consisted of a photo opportunity at what is reputed to be the biggest bumble bee in the world my friend and I decided, for which read I decided, that it was beer o'clock. This is not unusual as just about any time is beer o'clock for me. It was only going to be a quick one as Lynne understandably does not like driving unfamiliar roads in our aged campervan (RV) after dark but as usual she went along with it.

As is the case wth so many villages / small towns in this part of Alberta there is only one place to go and here it is the Falher Hotel aka Cozy Lounge. Again as is typical it is multi-functional and serves as hotel, bar and restaurant. There is not much to say about it really as it has the obligatory fruit machines (VLTs, gaming machines, pokies) whatever you care to call them, several TVs and apparently far too much space.

OK, it was a weeknight but even so at about 2000 hours I would have expected more than the three patrons there were. Still, the guy at the bar who engaged me in conversation was friendly enough if somewhat bemused as to why we were bothering to visit this fairly sleepy little town. Similarly sociable was the lady serving behind the bar who even had the good grace to laugh at my pretty lame joke regarding the sign announcing "shooters bar. I said I hoped it referred to alcohol rather than gunplay and she said it did. OK, I warned you it was lame.

I don't really do shooters and so settled for my usual beer which was of the bottled variety as many places hereabouts don't do draught. I suppose the volume of trade does not justify it as it would go off and bottles have a longer shelf life. Lynne had her usual non-alcoholic refreshment and I thought the prices were a touch higher than usual for the region although not horribly so but I suppose this reflects the monopoly position and the overheads of running a place of this size.

OK, I said we went in for one but it did stretch to two although I did see them off in pretty short order. When I used the facilities before leaving they were clean and tidy, no problem there.

The Falher Hotel / Cozy Lounge is just yet another of the many welcoming hostelries we found on our travels round Alberta and whilst the traveller does not really have an option in town it is as good as any.
