The town of Falcarragh has as many faces as it has names! On some maps it shows up as 'Crossroads' deriving from its Irish language name Na Croisbhealaí but older maps refer to it as Robinson's Town, but its now listed as An Fál Carrach in Gaelic meaning the long or rough hedge. A town of around 1,500 souls it lies between the barren beauty of the Derryveagh mountains and the north atlantic ocean. Once a thriving market town, Falcarragh used to draw people from a 20mile radius on the Friday Market day. Now with so many cars & (a little more) money people often shop in Letterkenny and even Derry. Still the town sports some fine shop fronts, a particularly warm welcome in the Shamrock pub, and a visitor's centre housed in the old Police Barracks (An tSean Bheairic in Irish). It boasts a rich cultural heritage, both Gaelic and English-speaking. The town enjoys wonderful seascapes out to Tory Island and the ocean. The beach (the back strand - as its known) is a two mile strip of white-golden sand overlooking Horn Head's sea cliffs to the east and Tory, Inis Bó Finne, Inis Dooey and Inis beg to the west. A great 'jumping off' point for walks along the coast or in the hills, the town is well worth a visit. see www.falcarraghvisitorcentre.com and www.falcarraghfestival.com

Walking the Dog on the Back Strand, Falcarragh
posted by:
Feb 13, 2008
As often as possible I try and get some walking time on the 'back strand' - that's the local beach just outside the town of Falcarragh in north west Donegal - along with 'Boo' my dog. Apart from the very middle of summer on a hot day, a large 'crowd' might consist of 5 or 6 people spread over the two miles of sand. Several times I've brought visiting friends along and each time I do this I experience the 'familiar' - anew.  So, I know you are busy... and it might turn to rain... and yo...
