Our alarm went off really nice and early so we had time to eat the nice sweet roll we had purchased and have a good cup of coffee before checking out and heading to the airport.  We always take along a unit that heats water and some instant coffee.  Our luggage was all ready to go so we s…

Up before sunrise for a nice early flight out of Fairbanks, the first of three flights today for us.  We won’t get home until nearly dusk tonight.  We had planned ahead for this early morning and had coffee and sweet rolls in the room so that we would have something on our tummys. …

As always all good trips must come to an end.  The hard part is turning the car around and the even harder part is holding off thinking of what you need to do for work the next day.  So the best thing is to drive slower and take a few pics for your travBuddies............  sc

Tried to take advantage of the few hours of light and hit a popular spot in the summer in Fairbanks called Pioneer Park.  It has a bunch of historical building and such around.  Just felt like walking around in the cold and taking a few pictures that have some color in them too....

Heading North

After a hearty breakfast, we loaded Sun Camp's devoted Cessna 180 bush-plane with the gear that I hauled and that of a driller who was heading home. Our flight south was sunny and smooth. High above mountain lakes, nameless streams, the green and golden hills along the mighty Y…

Chicken to Fairbanks- fun day!
posted by:
Feb 13, 2008 – Oct 23, 2008
Well, we didn't strike it rich gold mining this morning, but we sure had a lot of fun!  The Binkley Family, who owns the terrific Riverboat Discovery, also own El Dorado Gold Mine and the kids had a blast.  Ned and I sure enjoyed it, but felt like the Riverboat was a better value for…

July 29, 2008 We went to the El Dorado Gold Mine- that was lots of fun. The mine was owned by the same family who did the Discovery Riverboat. We first went on a train that led us into a permafrost tunnel. There we were taught about the bedrock and how miners looked for other mineral veins in or…

Last stop, Fairbanks

This was our last stop. Here you can see the Northern Lights, but no such luck for me. While we were here there was a common forest fire which clouded up the sky so much we couldn't see a thing. It was actually so bad everyone left with a sore throat. While we were in Fairbanks we went white water…

And by early morning, I mean 12:30 AM (or 4:30 AM by my body clock).  Still light enough to see although the sun had set around 11:45 PM.  Shuttled over to the hotel for the night.  This morning and afternoon the Golden Days Parade tracked right past my hotel so I went out and mingle…

I guess there's a reason I have to go back. I rolled the dice and that's what they said "Scott go back to Alaska, that is where you need to be now". Even though I thought ten years up there pretty much covered it...... guess not. Maybe there's a few more exposures left on my roll of film! (I'll explain that to you youngsters who are only familiar with digital cameras, haha). I'll try and take some cool pics along the road!!

Fairbanks, Alaska, 358 miles north of Anchorage (by way of the Parks Highway), likes to think that it (instead of Delta) is the end of the Alaska Highway. Its central location makes it the focal point for the tiny villages scattered throughout the surrounding wilderness, and Fairbanks is a staging …
