In Fairbanks - but out of the way Sep 18, 2009
This large, 326 guest room, facility is anything but a lodge. A very large 4 story hotel with all of the usual amenities are here, including a fitness center, steam rooms, large meeting and conference center, gift shop and pastry shop, guest coin laundry, and shuttle service to the rail depot, airport or into a couple of places in town. They offer a special pick-up service by another firm to drive you to places like the big University Museum or to your other destinations in town that the shuttle doesn’t go, and this firm is priced at a much lower rate than the local taxis.

The only thing really unusual here is that it is built out away from anything. The closest business, a restaurant, is about a half mile by car, and nearly that far by the walking path along the river. A car would really be a good thing here. This hotel is in operation all year long and tour guests fill it during the week from May to mid September but has only one place to eat and that was a bar/lounge. No restaurants at all.

Our room on the third floor had a nice window which overlooked the river. It had two double beds, cable TV, coffee/tea maker, telephone, data ports, and wireless internet. There was a hair dryer in the bathroom. It was fairly clean but sparse.

Because we added two extra days here in hopes of seeing the Aurora Borealis we watched the Princess local tour desk close on the second day and that left us as the very last tour guests at this hotel. All of the conference and meeting rooms were closed and locked for the winter. The only thing left open was the bar/lounge.

Again at this hotel we asked for a wake-up call for the Aurora Borealis when we checked in but were told in a very rude manor that they could not perform such a task. They very harshly suggested we set our own alarm clocks for 1 or 2 am. I guess they don’t even have the courtesy of wake up calls. In an area where many, if not most of the guests are from well south, I was shocked at their treatment of patrons who wanted to witness, possibly for the only time in their lives, the Northern Lights.

Princess hotels and cruises are very well done and they make things very comfortable for all those who stay there. A few on-site restaurants and bars along with tour information make this an ideal spot for tourists without any transportation or any idea about what to actually do in Fairbanks.

The rooms were very clean, very comfortable, and definitely felt new and well cared for. It also had the benefit of being in that clean Alaskan air, along with a little chill in the night air even during the summer months, that made sleeping a breeze. It didn't hurt the first night that we were all dead tired from traveling from the Lower 48.
