Alaska doesn’t have any really big cities, it just isn’t that kind of state. Fairbanks, with a population of about 30 to 35 thousand, is the largest inland city and the hub of much that goes on in the state and especially the inland regions. But don’t let the rather small size fool you, this town has plenty to offer. The University of Alaska Museum of the North is housed on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus. They have an amazing collection of artifacts and items collected from around the state and display them very well. The Gold mine tour and the Discovery III steamboat tour are other options. Several sports teams are here too, for Ice Hockey, Indoor Football, basketball and baseball. Mining is one of the top economic influences, along with tourism.

7.24.08 Chicken to Fairbanks
It is amazing how productive a day can be with continuous sunlight! The darkness in Eagle must have been due to the surrounding forest because it is twilight right now at midnight, Alaska time.
&nb…Alaska Highway . Did you know the U.S. government punched the Alaska Highway through from Dawson Creek , British Columbia in just 8 months, after Pearl Harbor was attacked? In fact, the U.S. started constructing it a good month before we got formal Canadian permission… Chicken to Fairbanks- fun day! |

Des Morgens habe ich mich auf den Rückweg nach Fairbanks gemacht - nicht ohne vorher nochmals in North Pole vorbeizuschauen, wo das Santa Claus House nun geöffnet war. Im Inneren befindet sich ein nicht gerade kleiner Laden, in dem ausschließlich…Alaska (überall mit der eindeutig mehrdeutigen Abkürzung "U of A" beschildert) gefahren, die im Nordwesten der Stadt auf einem Hügel liegt. Dort gibt es, neben den zahlreichen Instituten, die sich natürlich mit Bergbau und Geophysik auseinandersetzen, ein Museum of Alaska. Dieses besteht… Alaska Museum |

Bald nach Sonnenaufgang habe ich mich auf den Rückweg nach Fairbanks gemacht. Mein erster Weg hat mich zum Flughafen geführt, dort habe ich den Mietvertrag für mein Auto um eine Woche verlängert. Anschließend wollte ich das Auto einer dringend …Alaskas - und nebenan in einer Bank den gesuchten Bankomaten. Schließlich war Bargeld behoben und das Auto gewaschen und ich habe mich auf den Weg zum Cleary Summit gemacht - einer Anhöhe am Steese Highway, nicht allzu weit von Fairbanks entfernt. Der Weg dorthin führt vorbei… Nordlicht 1 |
