Faial is one of a group of Portugese islands called the Azores, located off the west of Portual in the Atlantic. Over time Faial (an other Azorian islands) have served as the last stop for sailors between Europe and America and the harbour walls are covered in paintings made by sailors stopping on the island.
Throughout history the island has been dependant on whaling but the eruption of the Capelinhos volcano in 1957 caused the evacuation of 4000 people to America and the influence of animal rights caused the demise of the Whaling industry. Now, rather than killing the whales sightseeing tours are organised and this is one of the main things that attracts people to the island along with trips up the to the Caldera (crater).

After arriving at the airport on Faial and collecting our luggage (which thankfully had not ventured to another airport) we were taken by Taxi to our hotel. That evening we had time for a quick walk down the main street and a meal at Peters Bar, apparently a famous restaurant.
Breakfast was provided for us at the hotel and there was a huge selection including bacon and egg, cereal, fruit, bread and yoghurt. I opted for my standard bowl of cereal with plenty of milk most days.

The sailers make colourful paintings in the harbour. Peter Café Sport is a very famous café, which is a nice place to go out for a drink in the evening.
