Faial Vacation Guide
Faial is one of a group of Portugese islands called the Azores, located off the west of Portual in the Atlantic. Over time Faial (an other Azorian islands) have served as the last stop for sailors between Europe and America and the harbour walls are covered in paintings made by sailors stopping on the island.
Throughout history the island has been dependant on whaling but the eruption of the Capelinhos volcano in 1957 caused the evacuation of 4000 people to America and the influence of animal rights caused the demise of the Whaling industry.
Now, rather than killing the whales sightseeing tours are organised and this is one of the main things that attracts people to the island along with trips up the to the Caldera (crater).
